Quick answer: For most job seekers, the reverse-chronological resume format is the safest choice for applicant tracking systems (ATS) and recruiters. A hybrid (combination) format works well for career changers and experienced specialists. A pure functional format is the riskiest: it hides dates and job context, which both ATS parsers and recruiters rely on.
A resume format isn't about looks. It decides what a recruiter sees first, and how cleanly ATS software can split your file into fields like job title, employer, dates and skills. Below we compare the three standard resume formats, shows a short example of each, and tells you which one to use as a fresher, a career changer, or someone with an employment gap, with notes for the USA, India and the Philippines.
What Is a Resume Format?
A resume format is the order of your sections and what you put first. Every format uses the same building blocks (contact details, summary, experience, skills, education), but arranges them differently:
- Chronological: work history first, newest job at the top.
- Functional: skills first, grouped by theme, with work history reduced to a short list or left out.
- Hybrid (combination): a strong skills or summary section first, followed by a full chronological work history.
Format is different from layout (one column vs two columns) and file type (PDF vs DOCX). You can get the format right and still lose points because of a two-column layout or text boxes. We tested that in our guide on how to check if your resume is ATS friendly: the same content scored 79/100 as a single-column file and 75/100 as a two-column file in our checker.
Resume Formats Compared: Quick Table
| Chronological | Functional | Hybrid (Combination) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What comes first | Work experience (newest first) | Skills grouped by theme | Summary + key skills, then experience |
| Shows dates clearly | Yes | Often hidden or minimal | Yes |
| ATS parsing | Easiest to parse | Weakest: skills are not tied to jobs or dates | Good, if experience still has titles and dates |
| Recruiter reaction | Familiar and trusted | Can look like you are hiding something | Positive when skills match the job |
| Best for | Steady career in one field | Very rare cases (see below) | Career changers, specialists, people with gaps |
| Length | 1 page (early career), 1–2 pages (experienced) | 1 page | 1–2 pages |
| Our verdict for ATS | ✅ Best default | ⚠️ Avoid in most cases | ✅ Strong alternative |
1. Chronological Resume Format
The reverse-chronological format lists your jobs from most recent to oldest. Indeed's career guide describes it as the most common format and a good fit for people with consistent work history in one field (Indeed). Harvard's career office also builds its resume guidance around reverse-chronological experience entries (Harvard FAS Mignone Center for Career Success).
Section order
- Contact information
- Professional summary (2–3 lines)
- Work experience (newest first: job title, company, location, dates, 3–5 achievement bullets)
- Education
- Skills
- Certifications (optional)

Why ATS reads it best
ATS software looks for a simple pattern: job title, employer and dates sitting together. This format gives it exactly that. A recruiter can also see your progress at a glance.
When to use it
- You have worked in the same field for a few years.
- Your recent job is closely related to the job you want.
- You have no long gaps, or only short ones you can explain.
2. Functional Resume Format
A functional (skills-based) resume groups your abilities under headings such as "Project Management" or "Customer Service" and pushes work history to the bottom, often without dates.
Example (short)
AYESHA KHAN
Chicago, IL · ayesha.khan@email.com
SKILLS SUMMARY
Digital Marketing
• Planned 40+ email campaigns and tracked results in GA4
Event Management
• Coordinated logistics for 12 trade-show booths
WORK HISTORY
BrightLane Software · Northfield EventsWhy it is risky for ATS
- Achievements are not linked to a job. The ATS cannot tell where or when you used a skill, so experience-based filters (for example "3+ years in marketing") may not count it.
- Missing dates. Application forms usually ask for start and end dates. Leave them off the resume and the profile the system builds from it may come out incomplete.
- Recruiter doubt. A resume with no dates makes readers wonder what is missing.
When (rarely) to use it
Use it only if an employer asks for a skills-based resume. Otherwise, a hybrid resume gives you the same skills-first opening without hiding your history.
3. Hybrid (Combination) Resume Format
A hybrid resume opens with a summary and a focused skills section, then gives a full reverse-chronological work history with titles and dates. You get the strengths of both formats.

When to use it
- You are changing careers and need your transferable skills seen first.
- You are a specialist (developer, data analyst, nurse) and the job lists specific tools or certifications.
- You have an employment gap and want the reader to see your skills before the timeline.
ATS tip: keep the skills section as plain text with commas or bullets, not a table, a skill bar, or icons. Our guide on whether ATS can read tables explains why.
Which Resume Format Is Best for ATS?
For ATS, the order of preference is:
- Reverse-chronological — cleanest data for the parser.
- Hybrid — just as safe, as long as every job still has a title, employer and dates.
- Functional — weakest, because skills float without context.
Format alone does not guarantee a good score. ATS-friendliness also depends on:
- a single-column layout with no text boxes or graphics;
- standard section headings (Work Experience, Education, Skills);
- a text-based PDF or DOCX (not a scanned image);
- keywords from the job description in your summary, skills and bullets.
You can check all of these in one go with our free ATS resume checker. It scores parseability, sections and keywords, and tells you what to fix.

Best Resume Format for Your Situation
Freshers and fresh graduates
With little or no work history, use a chronological format and move Education near the top. Follow it with internships, projects, part-time work and volunteering. Treat a strong project like a job: give it a title, an organisation, dates and a result.
Career changers
Use the hybrid format. Lead with a summary that names your target role, then a skills section using keywords from the new job ad, then relevant projects or certifications, then your full work history. Rewrite old job bullets to stress transferable results (for example, "analysed campaign data" for a move into data analysis).
Employment gaps
A gap does not mean you need a functional resume. Instead:
- Use the chronological or hybrid format and list the gap honestly in one line, e.g. "Career break — family care, Jan 2024 – Aug 2025".
- Add anything you did during that time: courses, freelance work, volunteering.
- Using years only (e.g. 2022 – 2024) can soften short gaps, but some employers and ATS forms ask for months, so keep the exact dates ready.
Experienced professionals and executives
Use reverse-chronological (or hybrid with a short "Core Competencies" block). Two pages are fine if the content is relevant. Focus detail on the last 10–15 years.
Country Notes: USA, India and the Philippines
USA
- Reverse-chronological is the standard expectation. Indeed recommends it for most applicants with steady experience (Indeed).
- Leave out a photo, date of birth, marital status and religion. US resumes normally don't include them.
- Keep it to 1 page early in your career, 2 pages when you have more experience.
- Add your city and state. Our test resumes lost a point on "Location mentioned" when no location was given.
India
- In India you will hear "resume", "CV" and "biodata" used loosely. For private-sector and multinational jobs, a clean reverse-chronological resume is a sensible default.
- Freshers should put Education, projects and internships first and include percentages or CGPA if they are strong.
- Personal details such as date of birth or a photo do nothing for an ATS score. Include them only if the employer asks.
- Use a clean DOCX or text-based PDF, as many portals parse your upload into a profile.
Philippines
- Reverse-chronological is the common format. JobStreet Philippines advises listing work experience in reverse chronological order with clear headings (JobStreet Philippines).
- Whatever the template, a simple one-column file without graphics is the safer pick for BPO, multinational and overseas applications that go through an ATS.
- Fresh graduates can lead with Education, OJT (on-the-job training) and school projects.

How to Switch Your Resume to the Right Format
- Pick the format using the sections above.
- Start from a clean template. Our free ATS-friendly resume templates use a single column and standard headings.
- Or build it step by step in the free ATS resume builder.
- Match keywords from the job ad in your summary, skills and bullets.
- Run it through the [ATS resume checker](/ats-resume-checker) and fix anything flagged before you apply.
Common Resume Format Mistakes
- Using a functional resume to hide a gap.
- Putting skills in tables, skill bars or icons that ATS cannot read.
- Creative headings like "My Journey" instead of "Work Experience".
- Mixing date styles (Mar 2023, 03/2022, 2021).
- Contact details inside a header or footer. See can ATS read resume headers and footers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best resume format for ATS?
The reverse-chronological format is the best default for ATS because it places job titles, employers and dates together in standard sections. A hybrid format is equally safe if every job still lists those details.
Is a functional resume bad for ATS?
It is usually the weakest choice. Skills are separated from the jobs and dates where you used them, so the ATS and the recruiter get less context.
Which resume format is best for freshers?
A chronological format with Education first, followed by internships, projects and activities. Keep it to one page and use a single-column layout.
What resume format should I use for a career change?
A hybrid (combination) resume. Lead with a targeted summary and a transferable-skills section, then show your full work history with dates.
How do I show an employment gap on my resume?
Keep a chronological or hybrid format and add one honest line for the gap, plus any courses, freelance work or volunteering from that period.
Is a hybrid resume the same as a combination resume?
Yes. "Hybrid" and "combination" are two names for the same format.
Can I check my resume format for free?
Yes. Upload your resume to the free ATS resume checker on ATS Resume OS to see your score and the checks it passed or failed.
